The vast potential of artificial intelligence (AI) is only rivaled by its many lurking dangers. While praising its enormous potential to “reshape both our society and industries” and to build “a future that seamlessly integrates technological advancement with social responsibility,” Forbes contributor Kalina Bryant simultaneously acknowledges the challenges and uncertainty that underlie AI in her recent article “How AI Is Impacting Society And Shaping The Future.” She writes, “Beyond automating routine tasks, AI’s disruptive potential extends from intricate data analysis to various professional fields.”

Of course, Bryant is far from the only voice calling out for the socially responsible use of AI today. A graduate of the University of North Texas who operates his own tech consultancy, Hassan Taher has emerged as a leading voice on subjects that relate to AI and its current and future effects on the world, both positive and negative. In addition to speaking widely on these subjects, he has completed deep dives on AI’s role in society as the author of the books The Rise of Intelligent Machines, AI and Ethics: Navigating the Moral Maze, and The Future of Work in an AI-Powered World. He has also written countless enlightening and influential articles about AI.

While he recognizes the many dangers associated with the widespread proliferation of AI, Taher ultimately believes in its final power for good. When asked by an interviewer to reveal a personal belief that might run contrary to public opinion, he responded, “I believe that AI technology has the potential to bring about significant positive change in the world, but many people are hesitant to embrace it fully. While some may disagree, I believe that with responsible use, AI can actually make the world a better place for everyone.”

First and foremost, the inevitable forward march of AI comes with many distinct benefits. “Today’s AI systems enhance productivity in a wide variety of industries,” writes Taher, “and the technology promises to revolutionize everything from healthcare to how we protect the environment.” In fact, when asked about the AI trend that excites him most today, he singles out its vast potential transform the healthcare industry. Its ability to rapidly and accurate process enormous amounts of data has tremendous applications when it comes to enhancing patient care and improving patient outcomes.

But highly efficient data analysis is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the promise of AI in the healthcare setting. “AI is pioneering personalized medicine in which doctors tailor treatments to each patient’s individual’s genetic makeup,” explains Hassan Taher. “What’s more, AI-powered robots are assisting doctors in surgeries in ways that increases precision and reduces recovery times.”

In terms of its environmental advantages, AI can be enlisted to combat climate change by ceaselessly monitoring environmental changes over the short term and the long term to accurately chart and predict climate patterns. Engineers also commonly use AI to optimize energy use. For example, electric systems that operate on “smart” grids have been proven to successfully cut energy waste and shrink carbon footprints.

Although much has been made of its impending threat to the employment sector and the global economy, Hassan Taher points out the various ways in which AI promises to enhance business productivity and generate new employment opportunities. “The advent of AI in industries such as technology, healthcare, and renewable energy opens up new job categories, requiring novel skill sets,” he writes. “Additionally, AI-driven automation streamlines operations, allowing human employees to focus on creative and strategic tasks, thus boosting overall efficiency and innovation.”

However, Taher recognizes that job displacement remains AI’s single most troubling issue and that fears abound about the likelihood that it will cut available and existing professional positions across a variety of sectors.While AI may create new job opportunities, the transition can be difficult for those workers whose skills are made redundant, raising concerns about unemployment and economic inequality,” he concedes.  

Beyond its impact on the workforce, privacy concerns loom large in the minds of many when they think about AI and its growing influence. The surveillance and data analysis capabilities of AI have enormous potential when it comes to collecting and processing massive amounts of personal data. Many people appreciate the increased personalization and security that this can provide, but it also presents a significant risk of privacy right violations. According to Hassan Taher, AI will inevitably lead to many conflicting challenges and solutions when it comes to responsible security and privacy protection. We will simply have to track the headlines to ensure that we are on the right track with these matters.  

In recent years, there have also been numerous news stories about AI’s struggles with issues of discrimination and inequality. Because it was made by human beings, we shouldn’t be surprised to find that AI carries many of our assorted human predispositions and prejudices. “Since AI systems learn from data, they can inherit and perpetuate the biases present in that data,” writes Taher. “This has led to instances where AI applications in criminal justice, hiring, and credit scoring have discriminated against certain groups. Such biases magnify and worsen existing social inequalities and highlight the need for more transparent and equitable AI development processes. Ensuring that AI systems are fair and unbiased is crucial for their ethical integration into society.”

The two keys to effective and ethical AI use, according to Hassan Taher, are public engagement and regulatory oversight. By educating people about AI, we can more easily avoid its many pitfalls while reaping its many benefits. And through sensible government policies and laws, we can encourage the responsible use of AI and protect people and organizations alike from malicious actors who choose to misuse it.
