The Kentucky Derby has been the longest running sporting event in America, and it’s now coming up on its 150th anniversary. This legendary horse race is the first event in the prestigious American Triple Crown series. Even though the race lasts only a little over two minutes, the celebrations last all day.

As the big anniversary approaches, the hosts are coming up with creative ideas for how to celebrate the Derby. Invitations must be sent out early enough to provide visitors with important information about the event, such as the location, dress code, date, and time.  The amount of RSVP responses helps hosts plan for how many guests to accommodate.

Food at the party should include a focus on Southern cuisine, with dishes such as buttermilk hush puppies, fried okra, and fried chicken taking center stage.  Hosts can choose between catering, a potluck style, or cooking all the food themselves.

Planning the day’s activities is also important to keep attendees entertained throughout the day. Popular activities include extravagant hat contests, horseshoes, and bingo with a Derby theme. Decorations should honor Southern tradition by showcasing the recognizable roses that are associated with the Derby’s nickname, “Run for the Roses.” With proper planning, a Kentucky Derby watch party can be an event to remember!
