Studies show that approximately 1% of the population is officially diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder. However, there are far more people who go undiagnosed across the world. Narcissism is not an unnatural trait, however, some people exhibit it in more extreme ways than others, expressing it in the form of entitlement, feelings of superiority, arrogance, or a lack of empathy.
There are several types of narcissists, all of which can be detrimental to the family dynamic. Poor communication, lack of boundaries, secret keeping, and gaslighting are traditional signs of narcissism in the home, all acting as ways that someone may feel manipulated by a narcissistic partner or family member.
Fortunately, according to Dr. Ramani Suryakantham Durvasula, it is possible for people to take themselves back from a narcissistic relationship. Knowing the signs of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is the first step. Once one has escaped from the situation, it is imperative to take the measures needed to remain there, through eliminating contact and using the BIFF method for communication (brief, informative, friendly, and firm). Although narcissism is not curable, people can still heal by safely separating from an NPD spouse or family member. A life outside of narcissism is possible when one takes the proper steps and uses their resources to cultivate a healthier environment for themselves and their loved ones.
