Marijuana laws

The United States is much more than a single country, but rather a hyper-varied collection of states all holding unique values. As such, laws from state to state can vary greatly even amongst bordering states. Unfortunately, marijuana is not an exception to this trend. For instance, Colorado is a state that made the possession and usage of marijuana for recreational purposes completely legal. Its neighbor to the east, Kansas, has yet to allow medicinal marijuana or even decriminalize it.

Marijuana has been a hot topic in the past few decades. Over half of all US states have legalized recreational usage, and many more allow usage under certain circumstances. As such, there has been a major uptick in users of marijuana. As of 2025, 1 in every 10 US employees openly admits to using marijuana. Nearly half of that group admits to using it before or even at the workplace.

Because of this rapid growth, it is estimated that more than 33% of employers are not prepared for the consequences of legal cannabis use in the workplace. One large part of this is that certain states require you to allow accommodation for medical marijuana users in states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Though you may not know what the future of marijuana is in your state, one thing is becoming more likely.  Regardless of what industry your company is in, marijuana will be something to watch out for in the foreseeable future.
